Melanoma

What is it?

Melanoma is a cancer that begins in the cells of the skin that produce pigmentation (colouration). It is also called malignant melanoma because it spreads to other areas of the body as it grows beneath the surface of the skin.  Anyone can get melanoma but fair skinned, sun burn, multiple moles and exposure to UV light from the sun or tanning beds.

What will I see?

Remember your ABCD:

  • Asymmetry: melanomas are normally asymmetric (different in shape from one side to the other)
  • Border: is irregular or ragged
  • Colour: There is normally a mix of colours
  • Diameter: Melanomas grow in diameter

When do I seek help?

If you are suspicious go seek advice from an appropriate medical practitioner immediately.
